  • CB Josh Wilson doubtful because of a concussion

    20 Nov 2009 | 1:15 pm
The Seahawks have not released their injury report yet, but it's uncertain whether cornerback Josh Wilson will be available. He sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday after suffering a concussion during Sunday's game. Wilson came back to finish the game.If he isn't ready to play, Kelly Jennings will start at right cornerback ahead of Ken Lucas. Has there been a switch at the position?"Josh has won the position," coach Jim Mora said.If he's not available, it becomes a decision as to who is playing better at the time, Jennings or Lucas.Center Chris Spencer and left tackle Sean Locklear both…

Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett was fined $7,500 for the second-quarter play in which he shoved his elbow against quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's neck. That was one of three fines levied against Arizona. Cornerback Bryant McFadden ($5,000 for facemask) and Beanie Wells ($5,000 for blow to Deon Grant's head) were also fined. The Seahawks had two players fined. Safety Jordan Babineaux was fined $7,500 for his horse-collar tackle of Anquan Boldin and safety Deon Grant was fined $5,000 for his part in the Wells' play.Absent from that list…
  • Mike Holmgren insinuates no meeting in Cleveland

    20 Nov 2009 | 12:58 pm
On his weekly radio show on KJR-AM with Dave Mahler and Hugh Millen, former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren did not flatly deny a meeting with Cleveland owner Randy Lerner earlier this week, but he insinuated that there hasn't been a summit with the Browns boss. At least not yet."I hope it's true some day that we get a chance to talk," Holmgren said to Mahler's question. The topic arose because earlier this week former Browns great Jim Brown was speaking at a luncheon when he said Lerner was meeting at that moment with one of the great football minds. Someone asked if it was Holmgren, and while…
  • Force it to Forsett?

    20 Nov 2009 | 11:30 am
Time for a feature on everyone's favorite story: Justin Forsett. I'm going to have to confess that I haven't been part of the chorus calling for more, more, more opportunities for him. I wasn't outraged when the Seahawks lost him to Indianapolis for a couple of weeks last season. But gaining 123 yards against Arizona last week went a long way to convincing me Seattle needs to take a good long look at him to see if he's the latest in a long line of overlooked and underestimated running backs who thrive in that zone-blocking scheme. Patience pays off for Justin ForsettBy Danny O'Neil, The…

  • Dustin Ackley to move to second base; Mariners add six to 40-man roster

    20 Nov 2009 | 5:34 pm
Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik just told some of us writers in a conference call that the team will have No. 1 draft pick Dustin Ackley , a left fielder, work out at second base and then attempt to play there in the minors this coming season. The move is "an experiment" for now and is not final. But it's something the M's want to take a look at. "We are not etching this into stone to say this guy will be the second baseman of the future,'' Zduriencik said. "It's just something we do.'' Zduriencik says having Ackley work out at the position now will give the team a better idea of where he stands…

    20 Nov 2009 | 3:57 pm
A bit of a news update here: Chris Jakubauskas has been claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Today was the final day for teams to set their 40-man rosters and Jakubauskas was obviously removed from it. "It's kind of bittersweet news,'' Jakubauskas told me, adding that he was blindsided by the move. "The Mariners called me today and told me what they'd done and my first thought was 'Wow, I hope I get claimed.' Then the next thing they told me was that I'd been claimed by the Pirates.'' Pirates GM Neal Huntington called Jakubauskas about 40 minutes later to welcome him to that…
  • Window of exclusivity shutting on Mariners where Russell Branyan, other free agents are concerned

    19 Nov 2009 | 6:34 pm
Tomorrow is the start of the free-agency period, where the Mariners can window-shop for some of the bigger names from other teams. But those squads can do the same thing for Mariners' free agents as well. The only name Mariners fans should really be concerned about is first baseman Russell Branyan, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2009 and has expressed a desire to remain in Seattle. The M's attempted to get a deal done during the 15-day window of exclusivity that followed the World Series, but, with that clock ticking down, nothing has been announced. "Nothing is imminent,'' Mariners GM Jack…
  • Felix Hernandez finally gets some hardware to take home

    18 Nov 2009 | 8:53 pm
One day after finishing second in the Cy Young Award race, Felix Hernandez has something more to add to his trophy shelf. I've seen it and it's pretty cluttered already, but this is something he'll hold close to his heart. It's the Luis Aparicio Award, given to the player chosen as the best Venezuelan in the majors. That's Aparicio himself handing the award to Hernandez at a winter ball game in Maracaibo, Venezuela earlier today. Our contacts down in Venezuela, at Diario Panorama (the guys who got the Adam Jones interview on the Erik Bedard trade two years ago) supplied the info and photo.

Looks like three surgeries is all Rob Johnson is going to need this off-season. Johnson met earlier today with team medical director Edward Khalfayan and they both went over an MRI taken previously on Johnson's elbow. It was determined that while there is some inflamation and a small bone spur in the elbow, it's nothing that will require an operation. "I'm really excited about that,'' Johnson told me moments ago. Johnson said his arm was feeling strong towards the end of the season and that his throwing times to second base were in "the high 1.7 (seconds)'s and 1.8's.'' In other words, this…

Ackley to get reps at 2B The entire beat (Shannon Drayer, Geoff Baker, Larry LaRue) is reporting that the Seattle Mariners are going to take a look at Dustin Ackley, a high school shortstop, as a second baseman.  This was a popular idea among some fans after Ackley’s college coach suggested in an interview that Ackley could probably handle the position, but it was never something I gave a lot of thought to.  After all, why risk slowing down a guy that is reportedly so close to the big leagues? Last offseason the Seattle Mariners were said to be fairly close to a three way trade involving the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.  When at first you don’t succeed, try again.  Rumor has it that the three may be at it again (Bob Nightengale tweet, Prospect Insider post plus comments), with Brandon Morrow and Edwin Jackson two of the names involved. It’s safe to say that Detroit and Seattle are talking, but odds are that Tampa Bay is just one of many teams Seattle and Detroit are talking with. The Seattle Mariners have more than enough starting pitchers to fill their rotation in 2010, but not necessarily the right kind.  Felix Hernandez slots in as the staff ace, but after that Seattle is looking at a lot of question marks. Ian Snell and Brandon Morrow both have great stuff and one of them could fill the second slot in the rotation if everything started coming together, but until they show some consistency they’re back of the rotation arms.  Ryan Rowland-Smith is a rock solid #4, or perhaps a 3/4 tweener.  Anyone else on the books is a #5 at best. • Wok not ready to roll? Try this trick for cleaning it

    20 Nov 2009 | 9:01 am
After reading my wok post yesterday, Eater Matt Aalfs sent this query: "I have an old steel wok, maybe 15 years old, made of thin steel with a round bottom and wooden handles. Possibly due to improper cleaning, the wok has developed a brown-black sheen on the inside, which leaves a bad taste on the food and also seems to inhibit heat transfer from the wok to the food. Can this be fixed, or do I need to start over with a new wok?" For an answer, I again turned to Grace Young's "The Breath of a Wok." Below, find her recipe for cleaning a rusted or overly sticky wok. Grace says this cleaning…

I've owned several woks, but never got into the habit of using them. My first was aluminum and came as part of a cheap boxed set -- with a pair of long chopsticks and a half-moon frying rack. It gathered dust in the far corners of my cupboard till I sold it at a yard sale long ago. I own a nonstick wok that's truly good for nothing, and I married into a small halfway-decent wok with a wooden handle that Mac often employs to stir-fry beef with cabbage and "brown noodles" -- one of the dishes he and Nate eat when I'm out on the town. But a week ago I treated myself to a new wok, for which I…

First came the outrage: who could be cruel enough to steal nearly $2000 worth of food from a food bank? The need is particularly dire: this time last year, the food bank served about 5,000 people a month, but this year, the…
  • Hey, ace of cakes: what's your favorite recipe? cake blog?

    18 Nov 2009 | 2:18 pm
My idea of a cake is more savory than sweet, so it's no wonder this is my favorite cake recipe: Cornmeal Rosemary Cake with Lemon Glaze I bake plenty of bread, but cake? Not so much. With exception to the one above and tiramisu (a recipe "stolen" from my old boss Saleh Joudeh, which isn't baked at all but also includes mascarpone), I don't do cakes. I don't even eat them much. Apparently, I'm in the minority. Everyone, it seems, loves cakes and their sweet little siblings, cupcakes (have you checked out Seattle's own CakeSpy, or the hilarious Cake Wrecks blog that had all my pals slapping…

Earlier today, President Obama signed new legislation extending the deadline for the home buyer tax credit into 2010 and expanding it to include current home owners who are looking to buy a primary residence. The Basic Requirements You qualify for the tax credit if the: Home you’re buying will be your primary residence Purchase price isn’t more than $800,000 This credit is not a loan; it’s yours, but keep in mind you have to live in your new home for three years. • Marselle: Great Condos, Crappy Neighborhood

    sarah.davies
    17 Nov 2009 | 9:55 pm
I toured Marselle last weekend, one of the few new condo developments in Seattle that does not tout any concern with the environment (at least they’re honest about it). The interiors are very nice, and there are some beautiful open floorplans. The photos on the website totally do them justice. However, the photos of the views, like the one below, are entirely misleading, because the squallor of cheap hotels and empty parking lots surrounding Marselle is always neatly cropped out. In fact, many of the lower level units look directly onto walls or rooftops. One even faces the wall of a…

  • Condo Remodel Recommendations?

    Matt
    17 Nov 2009 | 11:01 am
A reader is looking for a contractor to do a condo remodel. Here’s how they describe it: I am looking at expanding the exterior walls of the loft area, moving my wood burning stove to the opposite side of the living room area, and installing a spiral staircase where my closet currently is to go up to the expanded upstair area – phew! Needless to say, it would be a major remodel. Anyone have a recommendation?

  • Mortgage Rate Update

    Rhonda Porter
    20 Nov 2009 | 8:59 am
Underwriting guidelines continue to get tougher.  This week FHA tightened her belts on streamline refinances and over the weekend of December 12, 2009,  Fannie Mae’s DU 8.0 will be implemented.   DU 8.0 will require: minimum credit score of 620 for Fannie Mae, FHA, USDA and VA loans. (except for DU Refi Plus) maximum debt to income ratios of 45% (some wiggle room for strong borrowers) Next Friday, I will not be posting rates since our office will be closed November 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.   King County will be close on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 (furlough) and…
  • Seattle Schools – Admit by Address

    ARDELL
    19 Nov 2009 | 8:42 am
The Seattle Times reports that Seattle is returning to a neighborhood-based system. Given it has been about 30 years since Seattle abandoned that system, this is big news for everyone who lives in Seattle, particularly people who are buying homes in Seattle. According to the article, this decision passed by unanimous vote last night at 11 p.m. If we’re going to use our limited resources efficiently, this is a big opportunity to reduce transportation costs, balance out enrollment so that hopefully the vast majority of our schools have enough students in them to be successful,” said…
  • Elusive Value: Title and Escrow

    Tim
    14 Nov 2009 | 3:28 pm
Working largely in an industry within real estate that provides a service behind the scenes presents problems in conveying value to the people who recommend our services:  Realtors and Loan Officers. It has always been an awkward situation.   Realtors and Loan officers are customers, not clients.  There is a difference, not in importance each plays in a transaction (very important), but in how the relationship is treated by each party to the other. You have essentially two camps: 1)       Agents and loan officers who believe that they control your business by intimidation or by the…
  • The Statutory Warranty Deed: What You Should Know as the Seller

    Craig
    13 Nov 2009 | 1:42 pm
This is not legal advice. For legal advice, consult an attorney in person, not a blog. In most instances, a buyer will take title to the property by a statutory warranty deed. As the name implies, this deed is defined by statute. That said, this statute merely codified the common law, which evolved over several hundred years (beginning in medieval England). In any event, a statutory warranty deed includes several warranties, or promises, from the seller: (1) That at the time of the making and delivery of such deed he was lawfully seized of an indefeasible estate in fee simple, in and to the…
  • Friday’s Rates: Welcome Back Jumbo!

    Rhonda Porter
    13 Nov 2009 | 11:31 am
Jumbo’s loans are beginning to make a welcomed reappearance in the mortgage arena.   “Jumbos” are non-conforming mortgages and for King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties that means mortgages with a loan amount of $567,501 and higher for single family dwellings.    Although the jumbo rate below shows a half point improvement–it’s not due to change in pricing in the markets, it’s because of a lender coming back to the non-conforming market.  Bottom line, it’s a relief for those who have higher priced homes to sell and large mortgages to…

According to the South Correctional Entity Multijurisdictional Misdemeanant (SCORE) website, Lydig Construction is the low bidder for construction of the new jail, which will be built in Des Moines beginning this month. According to the press release, the new jail will “…bring a cost-effective misdemeanor corrections facility to partnering cities of Auburn, Burien, Des Moines, Federal Way, Renton, SeaTac and Tukwila.” Lydig’s bid was for a construction cost of $62,000 per bed, which apparently is half the cost of other jails planned in the Northwest. On Tuesday (Nov. 17th), Leemah Carneh, the man accused of murdering an elderly couple and two teens at a Des Moines home in 2001, pleaded guilty to murder.
