Sramana Mitra In my recent piece Reengineering Capitalism I highlighted a phenomenon that the global entrepreneurship ecosystem is paying very little attention to: Over 99 percent of entrepreneurs who seek funding get rejected. Yet, the entire world is focused on the 1 percent that is “fundable.” The media, when pitched a startup story, is interested in who funded the venture. They seldom ask how much revenue the company has or if it  is profitable. Incubators take pride in how exclusive they are and how many “deals” they “reject.” Angels and VCs, of course, discard most of their…

By request of ChrisM and Alex, I ran the commission numbers I posted Friday through an inflation-adjustment. The chart below plots the total yearly commissions on single-family home sales in King County in 2011 dollars, adjusted based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index for the Seattle area (series CUURA423SA0). After you adjust for inflation, commissions in recent years are down 55% from the 2005 peak and lower than they have been since 1998. However, they are still up 24% from the average amount of potential commissions collected through the pre-boom years of 1992-1996.

With a boost from the Nokia Lumia 900 phone unveiled last week, Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system will overtake Apple's iOS in 2015 -- but just barely, according to a report from research firm IHS iSuppli. The prediction echoes a March report by IDC, which also expects Windows Phone to pass iOS by 2015. Both firms expect Google's free Android operating system to continue leading the market. IHS predicts that Windows Phone will then have 16.7 percent of the smartphone market, up from less than 2 percent in 2011. It predicts that Apple's iOS will then have a 16.6 percent share, and…

  • Once bitten, Seahawks twice shy with first-round quarterbacks

    27 Jan 2012 | 12:45 pm
The Seahawks have chosen two quarterbacks in the previous seven drafts combined. The Colts, Cowboys and Jaguars are the only teams that have picked fewer, but that's part of a larger trend in Seattle where it has been 19 years since the Seahawks chose Rick Mirer with the second pick of the 1993 draft. There have been 208 quarterbacks drafted into the NFL since then, 44 of them chosen in the first round of the draft. Washington has picked three quarterbacks in the first round in that time. So have the Oilers-turned-Titans. But the Seahawks are one of four teams who have not chosen a…
  • Situation room: The offseason possibilities of Peyton Manning

    26 Jan 2012 | 2:31 pm
It's a long shot. I want to make that clear before we even broach the subject of the Seattle Seahawks and Peyton Manning. First of all, he may not be available. And second, if he were to become available, there will be a line of teams interested in his services. Now, with those qualifiers out of the way, let's get into what just might become the most compelling question of this NFL offseason. When last we left Peyton Manning, he was sitting out the season after undergoing three procedures on his neck in the span of 19 months. He still managed to show his value, though, as a Colts team that…

For 11 seasons, Ichiro Suzuki has been the Mariners’ leadoff hitter. • Oswalt likely to sign with Cardinals

    Taylor Halperin
    27 Jan 2012 | 10:30 pm
According to Jim Duquette, the right-hander is close to signing a deal with St. Louis.  Oswalt posted a 3.44 FIP and garnered 2.5 wins above replacement last season in 23 starts with the Phillies. This accordingly narrows the Mariners’ options on the pitching side of the free agent market.  With Jeff Francis off the market, we can expect the M’s to either ink Edwin Jackson to a multi-year deal or to stand pat with their current crop of starters.  At this point, though, they’re probably going to do nothing.  With two hotshot young lefties on the fast track to the majors,…
  • Prince Fielder signs with Tigers

    Taylor Halperin
    24 Jan 2012 | 3:38 pm
The deal, according to sources, is worth 214 million dollars over 9 years. I would not have been comfortable with the Mariners giving Fielder a similar deal.  Fielder is guaranteed ~23 million per season until 2020, at which point he’ll be 37 years old.  There’s a chance that Prince craters after the first few years of the deal, and considering his weight and his father’s career arc, that probability is a lot greater than Tigers fans might like. Since the M’s have not signed Fielder, they still have ~16 million dollars to add to the 2012 payroll.  I would guess that…

  • Mariners Sign Kevin Millwood, Apparently

    Taylor Halperin
    22 Jan 2012 | 2:51 pm
According to this article, the M’s have added Kevin Millwood.  Here’s what I said about Kevin Millwood several weeks ago: Millwood is 37 years old and right-handed.  He’s been a solid pitcher over the course of his career, hitting 3.3 WAR as recently as 2008 (which at this point isn’t very recent at all), and he pitched well for the Rockies in 9 starts last season.  Millwood’s 6.0 K/9, 1.3 BB/9, and 42.2 groundball percentage last year are nothing to scoff at.  The Mariners could certainly do worse, as they’re only looking for someone to hold Danny Hultzen’s rotation…
  • How Prince Fielder Fits

    Taylor Halperin
    20 Jan 2012 | 12:27 pm
The market for Prince Fielder has been weird. Teams haven’t showered Fielder with gifts and ridiculous contract offers, which is probably a sign that the few remaining organizations who were behind the curve on player valuation finally get it. Not only that, but the pool of suitors for the 27-year-old has been smaller than anyone expected. The vast majority of teams have an issue that precludes them from seriously chasing after Fielder. The Mets’ team ownership is downsizing payroll. The Dodgers seem reticent to guarantee big money to anyone this offseason, which is not surprising…

Got $3 million and a dream? The luxury housing market in King County was a good place to be in 2011! The average price per square foot, average sale price and number of homes on the market all point to the continuation of a huge buyer’s market in these higher price brackets. While there’s no set definition of what the “luxury” market is ($1 million buys a lot more home in Phoenix than it does in Seattle), for this we’re looking at homes that sold for $3 million or more. • Harvard & Highland Goes International

    25 Jan 2012 | 9:39 am
According to a press release yesterday from Realogics, Harvard and Highland is now being sold under the Realogics umbrella and Melissa Camp has moved over with the development as the Community Sales Director. The move is reportedly so Harvard and Highland can be marketed both locally and internationally. It was in April last year that we saw Harvard and Highland with 14 units remaining switch to Windermere as their sales team (including Camp). In short order, they slashed prices and within four months sold five units, leaving nine remaining. Things slowed a bit after that with two additional…

  • Happy Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon 2012!

    ARDELL
    23 Jan 2012 | 12:12 pm
2012 is the Year of the Water Dragon, quite a visual! While Chinese Dragons don’t necessarily breathe fire like European Dragons do, I still like the idea that the Dragon is in a Water Year. My youngest daughter, Andrea, was born in the Year of the Dragon. The center is a painting she did that I thought was appropriate to the occasion. Lots of ENERGY in The Year of the Dragon…just grab on to it’s tail and FLY! Happy 2012!

    7 Jan 2012 | 6:23 pm
A week from today, Saturday January 14th, there will be a fun event commemorating the 50th Anniversary of “The King” at The 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair. For those who may not know, The Space Needle was built for that event. The World’s Fair that is, not Elvis coming to it. I already have my tickets for me and Kim and my two sisters. I got mine for only $12 each via Brown Paper Tickets.com. More and ALL details HERE. Seeing an Elvis impersonator has been on my “Bucket List” for a few years. Once I was even IN Vegas and missed it. So this is a good opportunity for me…
  • The High Cost of Buying a Home & Selling a Home

    ARDELL
    5 Jan 2012 | 5:54 pm
Even if you are a First Time Homebuyer, you should be keenly aware of the cost of selling a home. Often people think they can just sell their home if they pick the wrong one, or if they get a new job out of town. But the cost of selling is usually many Xs the cost of buying. It is good to be mindful of the cost of leaving…the home you are buying…before you buy one. The Closing Costs/Expenses associated with Selling a home are fairly simple, but in $ much more costly than a Buyer’s Closing Costs. Also a buyer can pay ALL of their costs without “hard dollars” in…

It amazes me sometimes, which of my posts garner the highest readership. Dustin tracks the “per post” stats for Rain City Guide and shows us which garner the most eyeballs…from time to time. I was looking at the numbers over on my blog, which likely gets a fraction of the activity as my writings here. But once in awhile I get surprised by a single post getting over 20,000 views…for just one post. Usually they are posts that spark an interest nationally vs primarily local here in “The Seattle Area”. Here are the blog posts with the most views, not…

  • FEEL GOOD FRIDAY: Mirrors

    Scott Schaefer
    27 Jan 2012 | 11:01 am
by Dave Markwell I had the unfortunate experience of passing a mirror the other day. I did not look as good as I felt and it made me mad. I felt like the mirror was tricking me, because in my head, I looked much better. I had witnessed myself looking better many times. I was sure of it. What was this stupid mirror’s friggin’ problem!?! I wondered. After some soul searching and kicking my dog, I came to the conclusion that mirrors are both criminally deceptive and warmly reassuring. They are both tremendous liars and unbearably honest and it really depends on the day as to which I prefer.

  • Strange organisms shed light on how living things evolve

    LocalHealthGuide
    27 Jan 2012 | 3:06 pm
Halobacteria Researchers at Seattle’s Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) have discovered how a group of organisms that thrive in places with conditions that would kill most living things —such as hot springs, geysers, and salt ponds — rapidly adapt to changing conditions. The trick, the researchers report, is the organisms’ ability to alter the activity of a group of proteins that, in turn, rapidly reset many of the organisms’ functions simultaneously. These proteins, called general transcription factors, have long been thought to operate primarily in the background,…
  • The coming nursing home shortage

    LocalHealthGuide
    27 Jan 2012 | 11:51 am
By Steve Yoder, The Fiscal Times This story comes from KaiserHealthNews partner  The latest casualty of the Great Recession may soon be the nation’s elderly. Cuts in government payments for patient care and less construction of new nursing homes are already taking a toll. Add to this the aging baby boom generation and you have a worst-case scenario in which older people who need full-time care won’t be able to get it. “We believe we’re at a tipping point,” says Mark Parkinson, head of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), which represents nursing homes. If so, the…
