    6 Nov 2009 | 11:50 pm
Tomorrow afternoon, when West Seattle’s School Board rep Steve Sundquist hosts a community chat at High Point Library (1-2:30 pm), a group plans to bring that graphic to his attention. It’s a mashup of Seattle Public Schools‘ newly revised attendance-area maps for West Seattle with data from the U.S. Census and other sources. The group, Friends of West Seattle Public Schools, says it shows that the new maps would “(divide) West Seattle along economic lines (and) undermine educational progress in West Seattle.” The thick black line is the group’s…

The Washington volleyball team preaches that every match during the season is of equal importance, but with two conference powerhouses visiting Seattle this weekend and first place in the Pac-10 on the line, the No. 4 Huskies know that the intensity will rise today and tomorrow. Husky fans will be treated to a pair of Pac-10 showdowns this weekend, with No. 5 Stanford (15-6, 8-3 Pac-10) visiting Hec Edmonson Pavilion tonight and No. 13 Cal (13-8, 6-5) Saturday night. The UW holds a slim one-game lead over the Cardinal. The Cardinal have been one of only two teams to defeat the UW this season.

Microsoft exceeded the forecast it gave Wall Street - for layoffs. The company announced today that it cut an additional 800 jobs as part of broad cutbacks announced in January. The initial target was to cut 5,000 jobs but with the round announced today, the total is 5,800, spokesman Lou Gellos said. "This does complete that program," he said. Well, it looks like we now really do have an interesting World Series. Not just to see who will be crowned the best team in baseball. But to judge whether the pitching strategy of Yankees manager Joe Girardi or Phillies field boss Charlie Manuel was the best, First, let me mention that three Mariners prospects -- Dustin Ackley, Phillippe Aumont and Josh Fields -- have been selected to play in the Arizona Fall Leauge's Rising Stars Game on Nov. 7. Ackley is hitting .313 with three doubles, three RBI and a .795 on-base-plus-slugging percentage for the Peoria Javelinas. Aumont doesn't appear to…

Girardi is going with a three-man pitching rotation in the Fall Classic and it's worked for him up until now. But just barely. The Phillies were one foul tip away from getting out of last night's ninth inning tied and likely going on to win Game 4 with all the momentum swinging their way. Mariners minor league operations director Pedro Grifol told me that Saunders had been doing some exercises on the ankle and felt well enough to play. Guess he jumped back in there a bit too soon. 6 Nov 2009 | 1:19 pm
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jack Wilson, the Pirates’ shortstop most of this decade, is discussing a multiyear extension with Seattle that would keep him from becoming a free agent. The Mariners are believed to have offered a two-year contract worth more than the two-year offer the Pirates made Wilson — $8 million — shortly before trading him July 29. No big surprise here.  Wilson was brought to Seattle to be the shortstop for the next couple of years, not to be dumped after a rough debut.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Sweeney made Seattle’s DH spot one of the least productive in the league and their clubhouse the most cuddly.  Both players would like to return to their 2009 roles, but it’s pretty obvious that the Mariners need a major upgrade if they want to take the next step.  Griffey and Sweeney definitely improved morale in ‘09, and that can only be seen as a good thing.  I can’t comment on how much effect it had on the field, but it definitely contributed positively to making Seattle a place players want to stay and hopefully a place a few more free…

The Mariners are the latest team to jump seriously into the bidding, possibly hoping to have another front-line arm so they can deal Felix Hernandez before he reaches free agency. Rogers must have had a hard time figuring out how to open his article, because this is just stupid.  The Mariners wouldn’t go after Chapman as a replacement for King Felix.  The Mariners are kicking the tires on Chapman because he’s a good prospect, and good organizations…

The deadline for big league teams to set their rosters for the Rule 5 draft is coming up in a few weeks.  Last November Gaby Hernandez, Marwin Vega, Stephen Kahn and Greg Halman were added to the Seattle Mariners 40-man in order to protect them from being drafted in the Rule 5. There are a ton of Mariners minor leaguers that will be available in Rule 5, but most will be safe given that teams selecting have to keep each pick on their 25-man roster for the entire season.  All but the highest profile position players are safe because of this reason.  Pitchers are more easily hidden in middle…

From the initial comments on my overview of the new Wild Ginger and its Seattle counterpart today, I can see they're coming out of the woodwork already. Nah, not the attractive hostesses, the servers pointing out the signature dishes that helped put the Ginger atop Zagat's "Most Popular" index for 20 years, nor the sommeliers here to assist with a wide world of grape juice. I'm talking about the readers who need to note you'll find "better," more "authentic" and far less fussy Asian food -- priced for a bargain feeding frenzy -- at restaurants in the ID and Little Saigon, in the strip malls…
  • Foodportunity opportunity + Emmer & Rye @ Art of the Table

    5 Nov 2009 | 8:25 pm
If you're a food-blogging Tweet-and-greeter, chances are I ran into you last night at the second Foodportunity event at the Palace Ballroom. These food-networking shindigs, put together by Frantic Foodie Keren Brown, are a lot of fun for a social butterfly like me, and they're open to the public, so stay tuned for the next one. While there, I heard Ethan Stowell tell an audience he prefers not to read blog-reviews while Kurt Dammeier swears he loves them. Panelists (from left) Kurt Dammeier, Tamara Murphy, Ethan Stowell (photo/Nate Naismith, Far Sighted Images) I learned that a very excited…
  • NYT posts "100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do"

    5 Nov 2009 | 3:47 pm
Journalist and author Bruce Buschel is opening a seafood restaurant, and in preparation for that he's put together a two-part list of "100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do." The first debuted in the New York Times last week, the second ran today. His list pushed all the right buttons re: wrong-doing, and I'm not surprised at his readers' (voluminous) reaction, having seen it before when I've delved into the subject of service. A decade ago, after taking the job as Seattle Times restaurant critic, I posted a list of my own restaurant service peeves -- among them many cited by…
  • Tom Douglas and Jackie Cross set to open new restaurant

    5 Nov 2009 | 8:42 am
On the eve of the Dahlia Lounge's 20th Anniversary celebration , Jackie Cross confirms what I heard this morning: she and her husband and business partner Tom Douglas will open another restaurant next door to Etta's in April. Pots, pans, another restaurant. You'd be smiling, too. You know the space as the home furnishings store, Habits, on the corner of Western Avenue and Virginia. The idea for the new place "is a work in progress," says Jackie, and while the details remain under wraps for now, it will not be an extension of Etta's, she says. It will, however, "be a whole new world, a whole…

    4 Nov 2009 | 10:25 am
Be still my beating BBQ lovin' heart: that rascal Casper Townsend has gone and done it again, only this time he's opening another outlet of Casper's a Taste of the South even closer to my front door. If all goes accordingly -- and I'm counting on it -- he and his staff of rib-ticklin' Southern foodstuff-savvy servers will be yelling "Come and get it!" in Shoreline by early next month. Casper, smiling at his Lake Forest Park "Come-get-some, Sugah!" shack. Read more...

  • Moda Repossessed?

    Matt
    3 Nov 2009 | 11:17 am
Hideous Belltown has a curious story about Moda, The Moda’s Hilarious and Hazardous Predicament: I received an email from tipster Chad on Friday. He detailed an outlandish story: he was walking by the Moda Apartments on 3rd, between Bell & Battery and saw some rather large men scaling the side of the building on tall ladders, apparently without the knowledge of Moda management. They proceeded to partially dismantle at least five of the building’s balconies and throw them into their truck. When Chad asked the guys about it, they said that the Moda owed them $20,000 and they…

  • Friday’s Rates following the Jobs Report

    Rhonda Porter
    6 Nov 2009 | 9:25 am
This is the first Friday of the month and if you’ve been reading my rate post for a while, you know this means that The Jobs Report was released this morning.   The data from the Jobs Report revealed worse than expected data with unemployment at 10.2%  and 190,000 non-farm payroll jobs lost in October.   We now have the highest unemployment since 1983.   Those employed also face cutbacks–the average workweek for October was reported at a record low 33 hours.    Bad news for the economy tends to translate to improved mortgage rates as investors seek the safety of bonds,…
  • Two Homebuyer Credits in One Bill

    ARDELL
    5 Nov 2009 | 3:42 pm
Well it’s all approved and just needs the President’s Signature, so I think we can pretty much call this Homebuyer Credit Bill a done deal. I am not going to call it an extension of the $8,000 credit, for fear that too many will miss the added $6,500 credit for *move up buyers. Two credits in one bill. We won’t have the IRS links until after the Bill is passed, of course, but I updated my post of last week to reflect all of the things I expect this bill to have. Very little change from what was expected. On the $6,500 credit start date, so far my info suggests contract date…

  • Investors, Tax Credit & 90 Day Seasoning.

    5 Nov 2009 | 9:16 am
I rarely write on investor topics, because most of my topics come from recent issues discussed with one or more of my clients. But this week I was speaking with one of the few investor clients I choose to work with, though I use the term “work with” loosely, as most of the time I tell him “no, I don’t think that’s going to work out well for you.” The client is looking at relatively lower priced homes. Without getting into too much detail due to confidentiality reasons, suffice it to say that the property purchased would end up back on market in a short…
  • Escrow Trenches: nutty funding conditions

    Tim
    4 Nov 2009 | 11:49 am
Recall those episodes where Jerry Seinfeld grits his teeth and in one exasperated and frustrated breadth says, “Neeeewman!” Similarly, so do title and escrow staff in dealing with lender funding conditions and other challenges that seemingly are for no other purpose but to drive us to the closet for our straight-jackets. Unfortunately, some conditions cannot be easily met at the moment the request comes over the fax or e-mail.   Some require work that delays closings.  Or, in extreme cases a condition can completely shut down all other transactions you are working on for a…
